The Stage 2 DBP rule is here and presenting tough choices for water system operators. Upgrades to the treatment plant are expensive and constrained by existing infrastructure. Changing disinfectants can also be expensive and difficult to sell to a wary board and community.
Many operators are now looking to remove Trihalomethanes (THMs) and achieve Stage 2 compliance by targeting the distribution system with in-tank aeration. Aeration, or air stripping, is the process by which water is infused with air to remove volatile compounds like THMs. This technology has already demonstrated successful DBP removal in storage tanks in Stanly County, NC; Ballinger, TX and Monterey, CA.
